The team of Michael Owen, Matthew Turner (Exeter) and Kieran Rooney-Heason (Barnstaple) defeated Cornwall 6-2 and Somerset 8-0 on day one to win Group A, ahead of fellow qualifier Somerset who beat Cornwall in a tie-break shootout.
Devon led 2-1 after three hard fought singles matches against Cornwall with Rooney-Heason getting the better of Charlie Standen 5-3, 4-2 and Turner going down to Oscar Pringle 4-2, 4-1. Devon No.1 Owen then restored the lead by beating the hard working Freddie Stone 5-4, 4-0. Owen and Turner teamed up to clinch the tie for Devon with a strong debut partnership, defeating Stone and Pringle 4-1, 4-2.
Somerset followed next as conditions became increasingly wet and windy. Rooney Heason led the way by defeating Tom Clark 5-3, 4-0 in a display that saw him grow in confidence as the match went on. This was backed up by Turner who showed good patience and use of his big hitting forehand to demolish Matthew Crofts 4-2, 4-2. The tie was then clinched by Owen who overcame a slow start to beat former training partner Alfie Bingham 5-4, 4-0.
Turner and Rooney-Heason rounded off the tie with a 4-0, 4-2 win against Clark and Ryan Guy, showing good teamwork to complete the victory.
Day two saw Devon take on Channel Islands for a place in the final. Owen led the way against Timothy Boulter, running his opponent ragged, using all angles on the court to come out a 4-2, 4-1 winner. Turner went down to a fierce opponent in Aidan Varela, both displaying a high level of tennis but Varela winning the key points in a 4-2, 4-1 victory. Rooney-Heason was unable to move George Gallins around enough and lost 4-2, 4-1.
Owen and Turner teamed up again to take on Varela and Gallins in a must win doubles if Devon were to take the match to a tie-break shootout, which takes place at 2-2. After a slow start which saw Devon lose the first seven points, Owen and Turner recovered from 3-1 down in games, saving two set points in the process to win the set 5-3, silencing the large amount of Channel Islands support in the process. Big hitting from Owen at the back of the court and excellent net play from Turner helped them overcome their opponents 5-3, 4-2.
The tie then went down to a repeat of the doubles in match tie-break to decide who went through to the final. With the match poised at 7-7, a controversial line call on a second serve went against Devon and the Channel Islands were able to secure a 10-7 win and a place in the final which they subsequently lost to Avon.
This left Devon in a play off for third place and they overcame their earlier disappointment, showing resilience and determination to whitewash Somerset again. Owen completed an unbeaten singles weekend by defeating Bingham 4-0, 4-2. Turner showed good resolve to come through against Matthew Crofts 5-3, 4-2. This was backed up by Rooney-Heason, giving a consistent performance against Ryan Guy to win 4-1 4-1. The doubles was then conceded by Somerset.
