Flybe girls hoping to take off!

Exeter based airline Flybe is supporting a new drive in Devon & Cornwall to increase the number of girls playing tennis at grass roots level.

Flybe have been a key sponsor for Devon and Cornwall LTAs, working together over the last 3 years to develop tennis at 10 & Under with great success. The counties’ aim now is to increase the number of girls of all ages playing tennis at grass roots, to encourage girls of all abilities and to support and build the profile of girls’ tennis for those already training and competing.

The plan is to offer opportunities to girls of all ages to experience tennis and started with the launch of Flybe Tennis Girls on Tuesday 25^th October at the Tarka Tennis Centre, Barnstaple.

Girls in North Devon were offered complimentary tickets to watch the AEGON Pro Series Ladies event being held at the Tarka Tennis Centre. The girls had a great opportunity to watch live, exciting tennis from the pro players such as Heather Watson, Anne Keothavong & Laura Robson.  This was followed by 2 hours free coaching on court with Lucie Ahl (former GB no.1, player at Wimbledon and coach to GB’s best female players).

12 girls of all ages came along and thoroughly enjoyed the on court session even despite the rain that drenched the courts at 3pm. The girls had a 30 minute session on talent identification, physical tests and on court skills with Lucie Ahl.

A spokesperson from the two County LTAs said, “In the future we hope to incorporate girls only competition at under 10 years, girls only training sessions and fun mother and daughter competition.”

The next opportunity will be in December when there will be a County wide event for girls of all ages and abilities.
