Sussex defeated Devon 3-0 in a mammoth 6 hour battle, the score not reflecting the closeness of the matches.
Yvonne Burrage lost to Nicola Cornforth 4-6 6-2 1-0, Jo Louis lost to Sarah Morris 5-7 6-7 and Kirsty Corin-Gray and Alison Copley lost to Julie Hobbs and Helen Mitchell 4-6 1-6.
"All three matches were extremely close and took all day which is testament to the gruelling nature of the rallies," team captain Jackie Nesbitt said. "We were playing on carpet which is pretty quick. The closeness of the singles speaks for itself and while it might not appear from the score line that that the doubles was overly close, Sussex's Julie Hobbs (nee Pullin) is a former pro (highest WTA ranking of 125) who won 27 doubles titles in her time on the tour and in the first set our girls largely matched Julie and Helen Mitchell shot for shot. It was a truly wonderful match to watch and packed full of amazing rallies and skilled shot making.
This is the second year running that our Devon ladies have made the division 1 national final. They were victors last year over Middlesex and we can only congratualte them on their achievement this year and wish them luck for next year!
