This year's Devon Junior County Closed, despite unseasonably wet weather at the start, finished in fine style on Wednesday 31 August with some thrilling finals.
Emma Hurst had a great tournament, winning both the 16&Under and 18&Under girl's singles whilst Emerson Styles completed the double with the 14&Under and 16&Under boy's singles. Howard Scott took home the 18&Under boy's singles title, the 18&Under boys and mixed doubles and the Toppy Anstey Trophy for most improved player.
Polly Bushby and Matyas Metyko won their first County Championships in the 12&Under girl's and boy's singles respectively and Chloe Binmore took the 14&Under girl's title defeating her club teammate Becky Ley in a close final set.
In the 14&Under doubles there was a first title for Bethany Matthews and Abi Skelley and Zac Sheppard and Buzzy Avis. Zac partnered up with Emily Staddon to win the 14&Under mixed doubles too. Lara Graney and Samantha Kenshole took the 18&Under girls' doubles and Lara also won the 18&Under mixed doubles with Howard Scott. Howard teamed up with his 18&Under singles final opponent, Oskar Wynne, won the 18&Under doubles.
Devon LTA Chairman, David Vinall and Sir Simon Day, President of Devon LTA presented the prizes and complimented the players, not only on their talent but also on the great sportsmanship on display through out the tournament.
Referee Bill Ahl with his usual calm, officiated and kept the tournament running to time despite the unseasonably wet weather at the beginning.
The tournament enjoyed an increased entry from last year despite a change in scheduling and it was great to see so many girls taking part!
