Maloney reaches junior Nationals Quarter finals

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Local junior tennis player Eliz Maloney, who lives in Bournemouth, has progressed into the quarter-finals of the 12U AEGON British Junior National Championships after defeating Esther Adeshina from Hampshire 6-0, 6-3 at her local club, The West Hants Club, in Bournemouth.

The AEGON British Junior National Championships is the most prestigious domestic junior competition and the pinnacle of the summer calendar for many of Britain’s best junior players.

Speaking after her victory, the 12-year-old who trains on the same courts she played on said:

“I was trying to play a bit more aggressively than yesterday and it seemed to work. My forehand was really strong which was helped by my improvement in balance. I have played my next opponent previously and it was really close but I won and I am hoping to repeat that tomorrow.”

Maloney came out of the starting blocks strongly, her forehand and movement devastating her opponent in the opening set. In the second set Adeshina upped her game but never really threatened Maloney and the third seed closed out the match with relative ease.

The local lass will now face Emily Appleton from Surrey in the quarter-finals which will take place on Wednesday the 22nd of August.
