On the same day as Wimbledon Champion Andy Murray and World number two Novak Djokovic faced-off in New York, Bournemouth’s Talbot Heath School was celebrating World Tennis Day with an event of their own.
Talbot Heath is the top ranked girls’ tennis school in the UK and showed off some of their teaching skills as well as their impressive playing ability as they invited 75 Year 3 and Year 4 aged girls from local schools for an afternoon of tennis fun in their sports hall.
The session was led by Year 10 GCSE PE Students and some of the Year 7 and Year 8 Tennis Academy pupils who recently achieved national success. Talbot Heath was crowned double National Champions for Year 8 and Year 10 in the AEGON Team Tennis Schools’ Competition, for the second year running.
Of the 75 girls’ invited a total of 66 came through the doors on the day representing Baden Powell School, St.Peter’s School, Ballard School and Talbot Heath.
Miss Hardy, Head of PE at Talbot Heath, who organised the event said, “It was great to see so many girls pick up a racket for the first time and start to develop their basic tennis skills in a fun environment with lots of team games led by enthusiastic students. A great afternoon was had by all with one girl running back to ask if she could come and do it every week! We will definitely hold another outdoor event in the summer and make this an annual event on World Tennis Day.”
Talbot Heath School’s event was a local taste of how the world celebrated World Tennis Day. To go with Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic starring in New York, London welcomed legends; Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl and Pat Cash for an evening of tennis at Earls Court on one of the biggest days on the tennis calendar.
