Peter Norfolk, OBE and Olympic Gold Medallist, to open Southbourne Tennis Club’s refurbished clubhouse from 11.00am to 1.00pm on Saturday 17th May
Peter took part in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Paralympics Games gaining gold medals in wheelchair tennis.
He was chosen to be the flag-bearer at the 2012 London Paralympics Games
Peter has kindly agreed to open the newly refurbished club house which includes disabled and wheelchair facilities. The project was completed with the help of a Sport England Lottery Grant.
Southbourne Tennis Club is nationally known for its inclusion of players with disabilities, including wheelchair players, blind and partially sighted players, deaf players, learning disability players, and players with mental health difficulties. The club works with many of the special schools in Bournemouth.
The club had a buoyant membership of able bodied players as well, many of whom help with the disability groups.
Club Chairman, Keith Mitchell, said ‘this is a real honour for the club and it is great to see that our work with people with disabilities is again being recognised. We were named as Dorset Club of the Year last year for our inclusive approach to tennis. We are holding an Open Day along with the club reopening and everyone is very welcome.’
Free places for all tennis activities on the day can be booked in advance using the following link: https://clubhouse.lta.org.uk/OpenDays/SouthbourneTennisClub/79021170-f800-452f-9cbd-46b37b7489bc
