Wednesday, August 29, 2012

“Inspire a Generation”, was the rallying call of the Games and an early opportunity for local youngsters to apply that inspiration is The Powder Byrne National Mini Tennis Tournament, for 8 and 9 year Old’s, which begins with a one day regional tournament at; Sunderland Tennis Centre, Sunderland on Saturday 13th October 2012.

Players of all standards are encouraged to enter and the round robin format guarantees at least 4 matches. The tournament is a grade 3 LTA approved event, with the winners of each regional tournament qualifying for the National Finals at Bisham Abbey, Buckinghamshire, on 9th December 2012.

US Open Junior Champion, Oliver Golding, started his career by winning the Under 12 Powder Byrne Trophy when he was just 10 year’s old. Golding has gone on to win gold at the Youth Olympics, carry the Olympic Torch in his home town of Richmond and to make his Wimbledon debut this summer, where he took Igor Andreev, former World number 18, to four close sets (1-6, 7-6, 7-6, 7-5).

“Learning to compete and have fun doing so is crucial for any young player and there is no substitute for playing matches. The more you play in competitive situations, the more you appreciate that every point counts. The Powder Byrne Junior Trophy helped my development and I encourage any youngsters with an interest in tennis to take part”, enthused Oliver Golding.
