The Northern Counties Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, a part of the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour, takes place at Sunderland Tennis Centre from 29th February until 3rd March, with players from all over the world vying for major honours alongside some of Britain’s best players.
The ITF 3 Series event, which is supported by the Tennis Foundation and Durham & Cleveland and Northumberland LTA County Associations, has again attracted a high standard entry and will provide the North East with a chance to see some of this country’s best wheelchair tennis players in action alongside some leading international competitors ahead of the sport’s qualification period for the London 2012 Paralympics coming to an end in May.
The men’s singles entry is headed by British No. 1 and world No. 13 Gordon Reid, with his main rival being current British No. 2 and world No. 19 Marc McCarroll, the defending champion. In addition, a further five top 50 world ranked players will be competing for the newly named Northern Counties title.
The top seed in the ladies singles is British No. 2, world No. 13 and former champion Lucy Shuker, with British No.3 Louise Hunt attempting to retain the title she won in 2011.
Play commences at 9.30am each day at Sunderland Tennis Centre, starting on Wednesday 29th February with the Finals on Saturday, March 3rd. Spectators are welcomed free of charge.
Tournament Director John Schofield, who has been responsible for the event for the past 16 years, said: “This is an incredible showcase of some of the world’s best wheelchair players, some of whom hope to be competing in the Paralympics later this year. We are very fortunate to hold such a high ranking event in the North East. This is an event not to be missed.”
