Sunderland Tennis Centre Wins The Battle For Regularly Competing Juniors!

Thursday, January 26, 2012

The LTA Tennis Development Manager for North East & Cumbria, Jo Cunliffe, recently set two of the North East’s indoor centres a little challenge. They are both currently leading the way in terms of how many Regularly Competing Juniors (RCJs) they have listed within their clubs.

As of 17th January, Tennis World were on 92 RCJs and Sunderland Tennis Centre were on 88, so the race was on!

Both of the centres were tasked to try to get to 100 RCJs first, and whoever achieved it first would be the first club in the North East and Cumbria to do so.

Tennis World didn’t have too much time to think about how they were going to achieve this, as Sunderland Tennis Centre reached exactly 100 RCJs on 23 January. Graham Fowler, who is the Tennis Development Manager at Sunderland, puts on at least one competition per week, both internally and externally, so players from other clubs (especially outdoor clubs!) have the chance to compete indoors throughout the winter.

It’s through these competitive opportunities that Sunderland Tennis Centre has managed to reach this amazing number of RCJs so quickly. They are committed to providing regular competition throughout the year, and this winter alone they have hosted 46 events, and counting! These competitions range from mini red internal matchplays and leagues for those who are just starting out in tennis, to winter county events, and even International events.
