Top Talent Flocks To Sunderland

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Some of Europe’s finest tennis talent will descend on Sunderland next week as the AEGON GB Pro-Series rolls into town.

The women’s $25,000 tournament, which is offering free entry to spectators, is taking place at the Sunderland Tennis Centre.

Italy’s Anna Floris (ITA), currently ranked 173 in the world, will be the one to beat but will expect a strong challenge from French duo Victoria Larriere (199) and Irena Pavlovic (218) as well as Germany’s Sarah Gronert (204).

Annika Beck (226), Marta Sirotkina (230), Dinah Pfizenmaier (264), Tetyana Arefyeva (277), Ana Vrljic (283) and Alison Van Uytvanck (286) complete the tournament’s top 10 ranked players.

Tournament director Sarah Wooding said: “The standard of players in this year’s tournament is extremely high and a week of top quality tennis is in store.

“There is plenty of International and British interest in the draw which is great for local tennis fans. We are delighted to be going back to Sunderland Tennis Centre again, following the success of the AEGON GB Pro-Series Sunderland, women’s $10,000 event in November 2011.”

The tournament kicks off Monday 30 January with the Doubles final scheduled for Saturday 4 February and the Singles final on Sunday 5 February.
