Brits Dominate At Northern Counties With Five Titles

Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Gordon Reid (pictured) and Lucy Shuker justified their top seedings to win their third titles apiece at Sunderland's ITF3 Series event on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour as British players ended the tournament having won five of the six main draw titles.

Reid followed up his victories in 2008 and 2009 with a resounding 6-3, 6-0 victory over Hungarian third seed Laszlo Farkas but narrowly missed out on adding the men's doubles title later in the day, partnering 14-year-old Alfie Hewett.

With Hewett bidding for his second senior doubles title in a week after sharing in the corresponding title at the North West Challenge, he and Reid took the opening set against David Chabrecek of the Slovak Republic and Farkas, but the top seeded opposition from overseas edged the next two sets to clinch a dramatic 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory.

However, Shuker did win both singles and doubles titles on her seasonal debut. After winning the women's singles in both 2008 and 2010, the current British No. 2 secured the hat-trick in fine style, defeating Spanish second seed Lola Ochoa 6-0, 6-4. Shuker later partnered British No. 3 Louise Hunt to victory in the all-British women's doubles final as they eased past Debbie Brazier and Val Fisher 6-1, 6-0.

The men's consolation singles final produced the only three-set match on the last day of competition as 2011 National Championships runner-up Josh Steels dominated the latter stages of his contest against Eddy Holt to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. However, Brazier had a tough time in the women's consolation singles final against the vastly experienced Canadian former world No. 6 Yuka Chokyu, who claimed a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
