The University of Sunderland is seeking to appoint a University Tennis Co-ordinator to work within the Institute of Sport’s Development Team.
The role will be primarily focused on increasing tennis activity and particpation for Students and Staff at the University, as well as taking on coaching responsibility for the club and team.

With Olympic legend Steve Cram as its Chancellor it will come as no surprise that sport, recreation, and physical activity is of great strategic importance, both academically and recreationally to the University of Sunderland.
Through it's Institute of Sport service, the University provides specialist programmes in basketball, netball, futsal, swimming, tennis, and volleyball, as well as supporting the Citywide strategy and delivery for athletics, rugby, football, cycling, skiing, cricket, and martial arts. On top of this extensive range of focus sports, Sunderland also offers subsidised activity in over 40 sporting networks and clubs, providing the opportunity for all to be active, whatever the sport or recreational interest, and whatever level they are at.
Within Tennis, Sunderland is very well placed, with several great facilities spread across the City, the most notable of which is the Sunderland Tennis Centre, which reguarly hosts European Tour Events. Sunderland’s showcase venue is also part of a Citywide development programme to create a regional academy structure within the coming years.
Key responsibilities of the role include;
Increase participation numbers of University Students accessing regular coaching sessions.
Increase number of student and staff tennis programme members.
Work with the Institute of Sport Workforce Development Officer to create Coach Education opportunities for students and staff including UKCC Level 1 & 2, competition organisers courses, refereeing courses, Primary and Secondary Courses.
Manage internal and external competition delivery to suit all ranges of playing abilities.
Coach the Universitiy’s Tennis club training sessions.
Compete for the University in the BUCS Tennis Leagues.
Develop the provision of Junior Coaching to specific target schools and groups in the local area.
Support the employability and volunteering programme.
It is anticipated the role will require 20-25 hours per week.
The successful candidate will have a confirmed place on a Part Time post graduate course at the University of Sunderland and will be qualified to at least UKCC level 3 standard (preferably a LTA Licensed coach). They should have a good knowledge of the structure of tennis within the UK (LTA & Tennis Foundation). Prior coaching / volunteering experience is desirable and an enthusiastic and motivated individual is required.
The University Tennis Coaching Co-ordinator will be offered the following bursary package:
A £10,000 annual coaching bursary to undertake the duties detailed within the roles and responsibilities section, (jointly funded by the Tennis Foundation and University of Sunderland), free access to the University of Sunderland Fitness Suite as well as membership to the Tennis Club, funding for various professional development opportunities including National Governing Body coaching courses as agreed by the Sport Development Manager.
The bursary agreement will be for 2 years starting on September 2012 ending August 2014. The bursary is for £20,000 over those two years, which will be paid in split amounts at £10,000 per year.

Closing date : Friday 30th March 2012. Candidates will be short listed for interview and will be contacted by the University. Post will start on 1st September 2012, with the coordinator attending Tennis Foundation Training in September.
On top of this, there are some coaching opportunities at Sunderland Tennis Centre. They are looking for level 2 coaches for a few hours a week.
