Sunderland University's newly appointed University Tennis Coordinator has made great strides in his first term to attract more people to tennis.
The University has been advertising in various places, one being at the fresher’s fair where they used some inventive ways to attract people. They have built up a substantial mailing list of people interested in playing tennis. There has been a 133% increase in the tennis team, which shows great commitment alongside their studies. They have 2 BUCS teams (British Universities & Colleges Sports) who play in the national BUCS competitions and also local winter leagues.
There is social tennis played on a Sunday and a Wednesday with beginners coaching taking place on a Thursday; each of the sessions are well attended and numbers are continuing to build.
touchtennis (which is played on a smaller court) events have also proved popular, with more planned. There is a programme of over 15 hours of tennis a week scheduled at the minute and hopes for Cardio Tennis sessions and the introduction of a competition ladder for players in the near future.
The University is also supporting some students through their tennis Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Assistant qualifications over the next few terms.
