Tribute To Grassroots Sport's 'Gentle Giant'

Tuesday, January 08, 2013

Tributes have been paid to a man described as a 'gentle giant' of grassroots sport.

Ian Brown was chairman of the grants panel on the Future Sport-NE charity, which gives out thousands of pounds each year to help North East youngsters compete in sport. He was also president of Billingham Rugby Club and Yarm Tennis Club.

Mr Brown had been ill for some time and died on Christmas Day. He was 78.

Philip Lewis, chairman of Future Sport-NE, said; "Ian was a valued colleague and friend. His knowledge and interest in the development of sport in the North East was remarkable and for many years he played a vital role in the distribution of grants to assist youngsters in starting their sporting development. Many today will remember him with thanks and affection."

Yarm Tennis Club committee member, John Schofield, said; "I have known Ian for more than 30 years and played tennis with him and against him. I can't ever remember him getting annoyed. Ian was truly a gentle giant of a man who was liked, respected and loved by all who knew him. His memory will live long in our hearts and he will be truly missed."

Mrs Brown received the Durham & Cleveland LTA Award for Meritorious Service to Tennis at the county's annual meeting in September, but was too ill to be there. The award was presented to Anne, his wife, on his behalf. The commendation read: "Ian's advice and help to everyone in the club, but particularly the club committee, has been invaluable and, on many occasions, has brought common sense to bear on tricky situations. Ian's dedication and service to Yarm Tennis Club is unquestioned and has provided the guidance necessary in making Yarm a friendly, social, popular and extremely successful club."

Mr Brown represented Yarm Tennis Club for more than 30 years, playing in league and cup competitions for many years until ill health restricted his appearances. In 1999, he became club vice-captain and stepped up as captain in 1990 and retained that postition for the next 20 years.
