Tennis players in the North East have a great new opportunity to play friendly, competitive tennis this summer as the new Active Newcastle Tennis league launches in July.
The league is designed to allow anyone with interest in playing competitive tennis to play matches without having to be a member of a tennis club.
Run in association with Active Newcastle and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the new singles league is open to men and women of all standards as players are graded into groups so play only people of a similar level.
Matches, which are arranged between players over eight weeks, can be played on any court that suits them both and is aimed at getting more adults playing tennis more often by offering easily accessible competition.
An initiative of Local Tennis Leagues, an independent not-for-profit organisation, co-founder Sally Kinnes said: “We are delighted to be starting a league in Newcastle.
“We have had fantastic feedback from people in our other leagues around the country, and we look forward to getting to know the players in Newcastle.”
There are prizes on offer and lots of benefits to joining, including a free tube of tennis balls for everyone who completes three matches by the half-way point.
Jo Cunliffe, LTA Tennis Development Manager for Newcastle, said: “We want more people playing tennis more often so we hope lots of people who have an interest in playing join up.
“Hopefully lots will be inspired by Wimbledon and pick up a racket and have a go no matter what your ability.”
The competition runs from Thursday 11 July to Wednesday 4 September. Entry is £12 – £10 for Active Newcastle cardholders or students – at www.localtennisleagues.com/newcastle/joinnow.
