Wednesday, May 01, 2013

Davis Cup hero Dan Evans will make his return to action on British soil as he attempts to capture his second Aegon GB Pro-Series title of the season when the world-class event heads to Newcastle on May 5.

The 22-year-old was the star of the show in Coventry when he made up a 245 place difference in the world rankings to defeat world No.80 Evgeny Donsky and take Great Britain to a thrilling 3-2 win over Russia.

And he will take part in the Pro-Series tournament at the Northumberland Club which is a hotbed for some of the best young tennis talent learning their trade – and is totally free of charge to watch for spectators.

Evans goes in as the fourth-highest ranked player in the tournament and joins British No.5 Josh Goodall, and 2012 runner-up Dan Smethurst  as the top British player’s in action.

They will come up against a strong international line-up in the $10,000 clay event with Spain’s Marc Giner the highest ranked player in the tournament while German Tim Puetz and France’s Axel Michon will also provide a stern test.

Tournament Director Richard Joyner said: “Newcastle is always a popular event for the players, who always receive a warm ‘Geordie’ welcome.

“Also, it’s great to see Davis Cup stalwart Dan Evans, making his first pro appearance back on British soil since his epic performance against Russia in early April.

“There promises to be a great atmosphere for the Men’s Singles Final on Saturday May 11, as the club are staging a free open day on the morning of the final itself while the final is scheduled for 12noon.”

Qualifying takes place on May 5-6 before the main draw runs from May 7-11.
