Thursday, May 30, 2013

Sunderland University Tennis Club were flying high last Friday night after picking up an amazing 4 awards from the University's Annual Sports Awards evening.

The evening took place at the Stadium of Light and was a perfect evening for the tennis club as they scooped numerous awards. The club have really grown this year, thanks to Matt Wigham who is the University Tennis Coordinator. The UTC role allows Matt to complete a Master's degree whilst coordinating the tennis club and getting as many people playing tennis as possible!

The awards which were won by the club and it's members were:

Volunteer of the Year - Phil Jewitt (over 100 hours of volunteering across a variety of sports this year)
Club Colours - Robin Stacey, 2nd team captain (outstanding achievement in sports and recreation)
Half Colours - Matt Wigham, UTC (outstanding achievement in sports and recreation)
The SportsByte Writers' Award (given to the club that has, in the opinion of the SportsByte journalists, made substantial achievements throughout the year and represented most fully the spirit of the University)

Matt said; "This has been a fantastic year for the tennis club and these awards attest to that. Thanks go to anybody who  picked up a tennis racket with us this year and helped make the club a success. Hopefully we will build on this and next year will be even better for university tennis here in Sunderland."

I'm sure the club's success will continue next year as Matt continues his post as UTC-let's hope for 5 awards in 2014!
