Yarm's Australian Open finally took place on Sunday, a week later than the real thing, due to atrocious weather!
The sun shone but the temperature and wind were very un- Australian like! Organised by committee members Darren & Jim, the format had an authentic twist in that all competitors drew lots to become one of the top seeded men or women pros who competed in the real event. As play was 'down under', the first serve of each game had to be served underarm, which added further interest! Much of the amusement came from reminding players about the characteristics of their 'alter ego'. 'Maria Sharapova' no longer grunted, 'Nadal' had no superstitious habits and 'Federer' wasn't quite the genteel gentleman anymore!
Finalists were 'J Del Potro' & 'Miss M Sharapova' v 'D Ferrer' & 'Miss J Jankovic' who were the eventual winners.
Australian themed 'tucker' was 'barbied' indoors by Jim 'John Torode' Underwood followed by the presentation to the finalists of Aussie wine, beer and swiss chocolate!!!!!
Prizes generously given by the LTA were also awarded for various categories.
Great fun was definitely had by all - roll on the French Open!
