Durham and Cleveland were again hosts of the 9&U county cup this summer.
The event was played at the Sunderland Tennis Centre last Saturday 19th July. Division B was one of 10 divisions played across the country that day. Division B consisted of only 3 counties from across the north of England this year which included Durham & Cleveland, Northumberland and Cumbria as the Isle of Man had to unfortunatley withdraw.
The Durham and Cleveland team consisted of 4 boys and 4 girls, Jack Thompson, Joel Gibson, Oscar Fletcher, Zac Rhodes, Libby Darley, Emma Cooperwaite, Erin Forster and Elise Wilcock. Each match was the best of 9 rubbers, 3 boys singles and a doubles, 3 girls singles and a doubles and a mixed doubles.
Durham and Cleveland Captain Anthony Reynolds commented;
“We showed great character and determination in our first match against Northumberland winning some great matches to go into a 4-0 lead, before winning 7-2 overall.
“Our second match again witnessed some great tennis which we narrowly beat Cumbria 6 - 3, in particular Jack Thompson’s victory over Freddy Blades.
“This was the players 1st County Cup together, morale was high, raising the teams spirit which was evident throughout the day on and off the court. The atmosphere was great and the event turned out to be a great success thanks to everyone involved.”
