To celebrate World Tennis Day on Monday 3rd March, Yarm Tennis Club started the evening with some 20 players having their own touchtennis competition.
The club’s normal club night was then transformed into an international “touchtennis” event, with 29 players, comprising members and non-members, being split into 4 internationally named teams, namely Agassi, Sampras, Cash and Lendl.
Under floodlights using 6 courts, play continued for nearly 2 hours with lots of serious play, but a great deal of laughter and enjoyment. Most of those taking part had never played touchtennis before but once they had mastered the small racket and soft ball, and particularly the one serve rule, all agreed it was a great night.
After adding up all the individual scores Team Lendl proved to be the winning team with team member Caroline Pettit winning the draw to receive the touchtennis T Shirt being provided by the touchtennis organisation.
Final team scores were: Lendl: 84, Cash: 75, Sampras: 74 and Agassi: 50.
The evening ended with players tasting a variety of refreshments with international flavours and of course a suitable glass of wine. Thanks to Jill Gullon for providing this excellent spread.
