The Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW) kicked off to a sizzling start in Sunderland, which saw over 80 people have a go at tennis in Barnes Park on May 17th.
People from across Sunderland experienced the fun that tennis has to offer at Barnes Park last weekend. The sun was beating across the park as families were invited to try out various free activities including Family Tennis, Cardio Tennis, Mini Tennis, disability tennis and tennis coaching or free play.
Facilitated by staff and volunteers from Sunderland Tennis Centre and the Lawn Tennis Association, over 80 people from the ages of 2 to 75 picked up a racket and enjoyed a slice of the action!
From 10am – 4pm a whole host of smashing activities inspired families and proved that the game is so flexible. Tennis can be whatever you want it to be. Whether that is competitive, social, or fun!
Families enjoyed the tennis factory and playing mini tennis whilst cardio tennis provided a challenge to newcomers, parents and returners to the game! Even grandparents took to the mini courts to enjoy quality time with their grandchildren!
Jo Cunliffe, Regional Tennis Participation Manager (LTA) said: “We could not have had a better day at Barnes Park! The weather was perfect and the day was enjoyed by over 80 people from throughout the city! It was great to see people of all ages and abilities trying tennis for the first time and to hear so many people raving about the excitement that the summer of tennis will bring!”
Following the roaring success of the event held at Barnes Park, Biddick Academy will be serving up more free opportunities to pick up a racket as tennis fever begins to grip the nation in the lead up to The Championships, Wimbledon.
