The Regional Finals of the Y8 & 10 Team Tennis Schools event took place last week at Sunderland Tennis Centre over 13th and 14th November.
The Regional finals consisted of school teams from across the North who had previously won their local league event back in June, and then a knockout stage, to produce 4 teams in each age group and gender. Each team consists of 4 boys or 4 girls who all play 1 singles and 1 doubles match.
For the Year 8 Boys, a big congratulations goes to Merchiston Castle School from Scotland who beat the number 1 seeded team, Holmfirth High (Yorkshire) in the finals. Altrincham Grammar School (Cheshire) for Boys beat Southmoor Academy (Durham & Cleveland) in the 3rd/4th place play off, with some close matches being fought out!
In the Year 10 boys event, played on the same day as the Year 8, Merchiston Castle School again dominated, beating both Roundhay School and The Brooksbank School (both from Yorkshire) to win the event. Roundhay School had a really tight match against Ulverston Victoria High School from Cumbria, 7-6, to win the 3rd/4th place play off.
The Year 8 Girls event was played on Friday and was almost too close to call! But the number 1 seeds, Beaconhurst School from Scotland just beat Durham High School in the finals, 7-6 to come out top. Wakefield Girls High School (Yorkshire) beat Marple Hall School (Cheshire) by the same amount to win the 3rd/4th place playoff.
The Year 10 girls event was just as close with George Heriot’s School (Scotland) finishing first, beating Holmfirth High 7-6 in the final. William Howard School beat the Yorkshire School, Queen Margaret’s by the same amount in the 3rd/4th place play off.
All of the matches were really well contested, and the players had a great time playing at Sunderland Tennis Centre, who hosted superbly! The winners of each age group will now go through to the National Finals in December at Bolton Arena. A massive good luck to all of our teams from the North!
