Six schools from across Newcastle took part in City’s Tony Blair Sports Foundation Year 3 Tennis Challenge Cup Final, Tuesday May 19th 2015.
The schools had qualified through to the City Finals, which took place at Tennis @ Churchill following earlier cluster competitions and they did not disappoint with their enthusiasm, dedication and pure enjoyment throughout the afternoon.
There was a total of 48 players competing, with the girls playing matches first and the boys completing a series of skills based challenges. They then swapped over at half time and everything was still to play for with only 26 points dividing the top and 6th placed team. The players unrelenting spirit shone through right to the end and we knew the final score was going to be close. The spectators were thrilled with the display of skill, athleticism and desire to put in 100% effort throughout. This made it feel almost unfair to have the final places because everyone deserved to go through but the final positions were,
1st = Brunton First
2nd = St Oswalds Primary
3rd = Regent Farm First
4th = Tyneview Primary
5th = North Fawdon Primary
6th = West Walker Primary
Brunton First School and St Oswalds will now travel to Sunderland Tennis Centre on Friday June 26th for the Tyne & Wear Final. This is where a further 8 schools from across Tyne & Wear will compete against each other with the reward of a place in the prestigious North East Regional TBSF Year 3 Tennis Challenge Cup Final held in July!
The event was led by Andy Reed and Carlos Caldeira who are coaches at Gosforth Tennis Club. They were supported by some outstanding volunteers from Newcastle College and Walker Technology College.
Andy Reed who led the event expressed,
“It was a tremendous day for Newcastle and the 6 schools! All of the schools have fully committed to the huge range of tennis opportunities on offer and it’s so rewarding to see the youngsters grow and develop as players. We cannot say enough thanks to the Newcastle College and Walker Technology volunteers who were outstanding. We wish all the players the best at the Tyne & Wear Final next month!”
