Durham & Cleveland LTA is delighted to announce that Durham Archery Tennis Club’s John Heppell has been named the North Region’s Young Volunteer of the Year in the Aegon British Tennis Awards.
Having previously been named Durham & Cleveland LTA’s Young Volunteer of the Year in the Aegon British Tennis Awards, John’s nomination was put forward to a regional judging panel, who further recognised his efforts by announcing him as their Regional winners for the same category.
John first became a member of Durham Archery Tennis Club when he was just four years old. At the age of eleven, he began volunteering at his tennis club, eventually taking on his present role as Assistant Coach on the Junior Coaching Programme. The Regional Aegon British Tennis judging panel were impressed by John’s commitment to his volunteer role, giving up his Saturday mornings and Friday evenings to coach players aged 4-16 years, and his work as Durham Archery LTC’s Junior Representative on the Committee. John’s commitment to tennis has also been evidence in his speedy progression along the LTA Coaching Pathway: having already completed his Level 1 and 2 Coaching qualifications, John plans to complete his Level 3 shortly after turning 18.
The Aegon British Tennis Awards are a joint initiative between The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the Tennis Foundation, partner Aegon and 40 local/national tennis associations, including Durham & Cleveland LTA. The Awards reward and champion the people who deliver tennis in communities across Great Britain.
As a Regional Award Winner, John will now progress to a national judging panel who will determine overall category winners in the Aegon British Tennis Awards. Those successful will then be invited to attend the national Aegon British Tennis Awards ceremony in London on 4th July 2017.
