In place of the annual 'American Tournament' at Aston Ingham this year it was decided to acknowledge the contribution of Andy Murray and Laura Robson to British success at the 2012 Olympics by basing tournament play on the champions (ten point) tie break so successfully used in most of Andy and Laura's run to the Gold Medal final.
On Sunday 19th August, twenty-four players at Aston Ingham joined in a round-robin competition based on an unusual format of four-games plus champions tie break, thus ensuring a quick turn-round of matches and plenty of tie break practice for those not so used to the format.
Partners were drawn 'out-of-the-hat' at the start of play and a successful afternoon of tennis ensued, including an enjoyable break for tea and cakes, etc.
Winners were Mark Davies and Liz Probyn who defeated Shaun Cavanagh and Di Smith in an exciting and entertaining final. The whole occasion provided a busy sporting scene - alongside Aston Ingham Cricket Club activity who play at the same ground - demonstrating to the local population the extent of sporting facilities available in the area.
