Saturday 25th June
Somerset v Gloucestershire 6-2
Singles 1 Tresha Kumar (6.2) beat Alice Howitt 4-1 4-2
Singles 2 Thea Sprawson (7.1) beat Chandani Rathnam 4-1 4-2
Singles 3 Rebecca Stowell (8.1) lost to Suzie Carter 4-1 2-4 0-1(8)
Doubles Ellen Burrow and Tresha Kumar beat Rathnam and Tejrar 4-1 4-1
A match that on paper looked difficult but a spirited performance by Suzie Carter kept the match alive. She had to really battle back to win. The others were soundly beaten by their opponents, they needed to show Suzie’s fighting spirit and perhaps could have done better.
Wiltshire v Gloucestershire 2-6
Singles 1 Bea Watts (5.2) lost to Alice Howitt 5-4(2) 1-4 0-1(3)
Singles 2 Rebecca Heaps (8.1) beat Chandani Rathnam 4-2 4-1
Singles 3 Amelia Pirt (G1*) lost to Suzie Carter 0-4 0-4
Doubles Watts and Louisa Fuller lost to Howitt and Carter 0-4 0-4
A much better performance by all the players in their singles matches. Alice fought back from losing the first set, and showed the spirit that makes her so difficult to beat. Suzie was too good for her opponent whom she demolished in super quick time. Alice and Suzie then teamed up and won comfortably in the doubles.
Winning this match put Gloucestershire into the semi finals where we play Avon.
Sunday 26th June
Semi-Final
Avon v Gloucestershire 8-0
Singles 1 Amy Leather (5.2) beat Alice Howitt 4-1 4-2
Singles 2 Lolita Winter-Smith (8.1) beat Chandani Rathnam 4-0 4-0
Singles 3 Aryanna Bartlett (8.1) beat Suzie Carter 4-0 4-0
Doubles Jessie Sanzo and Lolita Winter-Smith beat Rathnam and Tejrar 4-0 4-2
This Avon team were easily the best team in the event. They comprehensively beat our team. Chandani struggled again in her singles and was showing a lack of confidence. Alice had a few chances but Amy is a very strong player and coped well with her attacking play.
3rd/4th Play-Off
Gloucestershire v Somerset 2-6
Singles 1 Alice Howitt lost Tresha Kumar (6.2) 2-4 0-4
Singles 2 Suzie Carter lost to Rebecca Stowell (8.1) 2-4 1-4
Singles 3 Alisha Tejrar lost to Ellen Burrow 4-1 4-2
Doubles 1 Howitt and Carter beat Burrow and Stowell 4-1 4-2
A rematch of our first match of the competition. I decided to give Alisha a try in the singles as Chandani expressed that she wasn’t keen to play singles. Alisha played very well and is one for the future and giving her a bit of experience won’t hurt her as she is likely to be in the team next year. Suzie couldn’t reproduce the form she had beating her opponent on day 1 and lost. Alice and Suzie played great doubles and won comfortably.
Overall
Finishing 4th was ok. This was about right with the team we had. We need a bit more competition for places and this will focus the players a little more to compete regularly and also practice harder. Overall their behaviour was excellent and they supported each other well throughout every match. Target for next year will be 3rd spot.
