East Glos Club tennis player Felicity Thomas wins British Grass Courts over 70s singles title

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Cheltenham tennis player Felicity Thomas has won the over 70s title at the 2013 British Seniors' Closed Grass Court Championships. The championships, which were founded in 1974, are played at Wimbledon's Aorangi Park courts.

Felicity beat Staffordshire's June Fisher 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 in a match which lasted two-and-a-half hours.  At 4-1 up in the second set, Felicity suffered a muscle injury and was on the point of conceding as the set drifted away from her. Serving was particularly painful, but her experience and fitness saw her through the third set.

Despite her injury Felicity went on to play her doubles final, rather than let her partner down, Ruth Weston (Surrey), who was also recovering from injury. This was another long match resulting in defeat 4-6, 6-7.
