Tom Mellor lighting the cauldron

IT was a moment to savour for tennis player Tom Mellor from Cheltenham when he lit the cauldron at the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games.

The 24-year-old was chosen out of 1,700 other competitors to perform the honour at the opening ceremony, were he met singer Susan Boyle.

The Special Olympics is the country's largest sports event for athletes with intellectual disabilities and is held every four years.

Tom was born with velo cardio facial syndrome, which meant some medical complications when he was little. It now means he has learning disabilities, but nothing that stops him from excelling on the court. Tom won his first match 6-1 against Shane Lewis, who he partnered in the World Championships in Croatia in June this year.  Tom went on to win Silver in the singles and Gold in the doubles.
