Hampshire and Isle of Wight Lawn Tennis Association is pleased to announce the appointment of former British No 1 Chris Wilkinson into the newly-created role of County Performance Manager.
Chris had an outstanding pro career, reaching the 3rd round of Wimbledon on 4 occasions and representing GB at the Barcelona Olympic Games.
He is currently an LTA Performance Coach and Captain of the GB U16 Boys team and is passionate about County Tennis.
“I would like to develop a clear ‘pathway’ for all players, from junior levels to adults and for small clubs through to big ones, which will encourage the best talent to come forward and represent the County with pride, the same way that I did” said Chris, who represented the County many times winning the prestigious County week event three years in a row.
He will be working with all the major tennis centres and with the help of the County LTA, he will ensure that all promising players, no matter where they play, know who they have to contact and what they have to achieve to reach County level.
“I would like to see every Club in the County knowing who plays for the County at every level” he went on. “That way every promising player will have a point of reference or a target standard to aim for”. His target is to see Hampshire & IOW players representing the County at National level and have County teams that are competing for the top prizes in the Country.
“There are many very good players in Hampshire & IOW” said Chris. “Few of them are good enough to play at professional level, but I’d like to think that County level is the highest non-professional level in the country and it would be great to see Hampshire & IOW squads playing with pride and dominating at that level”.
