Southsea’s Pavilion Café to get new lease of life

Thursday, May 02, 2013

After a year sitting empty, the Pavilion Café at Southsea Tennis Club is to get a new lease of life when it reopens on Friday 3 May. Local caterers Watkins and Faux have been contracted to run the café and restore this 1920’s art deco café to its former glory.

Watkins and Faux are passionate about creating the best quality hand-made food, and making it available to all. With an emphasis on ethically sourced meat and fish, organic produce and local, seasonal ingredients, Watkins and Faux’s aim for the Pavilion Café is to create a friendly atmosphere, top quality food and a warm welcome to everyone in the local community, not just tennis club members.

The Pavilion Café will formally re-open its doors at 10am on Friday 3 May with a fun packed day for all. Tennis will be free all day and there will also be mini tennis - with smaller nets, smaller rackets, and softer balls – which is suitable for under 10's. All the equipment will be set up all day long, free of charge, and anyone can come down and try it out. The mini tennis freebie will continue for the whole bank holiday weekend.

There will also be a social tennis club tournament in the afternoon (1400-1600) which will be a great opportunity to watch some fantastic matches.

Geoff Newton, Executive Director of the Lawn Tennis Association will be in attendance and local council Councillors Vernon Jackson and David Williams will also hoped to be at the Pavilion Café to celebrate the opening.

In addition to the tennis and dignitaries some of Watkins and Faux’s suppliers are coming down to talk to customer, perform demonstrations and give away samples. You can expect to see:

  • Winchester Coffee Roasters who will showcase some impressive coffee making,
  • All about Tea who will be demonstrating and offering samples of their top quality loose leaf teas,
  • Meadow Cottage ice cream who will be giving away free ice creams and smoothies and
  • Hampshire Fayre who will be promoting all the wonderful local produce available right here in Hampshire.

It promises to be a fantastic day for all, so come down to the Pavilion Café, Southsea Tennis Club, PO5 3PB, from 10am on Friday 3 May and once again enjoy the fantastic café building and sample some amazing food and coffee.

If you would like to come down and cover the opening please contact Nell Faux on 07931 586684. We would be happy to arrange photo call opportunities at any point during the day with any of the suppliers, local dignitaries or children playing mini tennis. The Pavilion Café will also be available all day should you wish to photograph/film the interior.
