On Saturday the 21st July Manor Park hosted the AEGON 9U Junior County Cup.  Herefordshire and Worcestershire were in Group E and had tough counties waiting to play them.

All players played well in hot conditions and showed great sportsmanship throughout the day.
The group that H+W was in comprised the teams from Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire and Shropshire. The team’s first match was against a very strong Warwickshire team.  All players started brightly and demonstrated great tennis skills both attackingly and defensively.  Unfortunately we were unable to secure a win for the first match.  However, Noel gave us a great start by winning the first boys’ rubber producing some brilliant aggressive shots while also remaining consistent.

H+W's second match was against Shropshire.  We showed great consistency throughout all matches and were able to play our way to a victory.  This time we had wins from David Turner, Noel Watters, Claudia Bullock, Sally Lewin and Amelia Short.   During this match we also had a win in the girls and mixed double with Sally and Milly showing great charisma and versatility as did Noel Watters and Claudia Bullock in their mixed match.

We were next scheduled to play Staffordshire and again it was tight with us just missing out after it came down to the final rubber. We had another solid start with all the boys winning their opening singles matches and the girls having close matches but just missing out.  We then lost the boys doubles but were successful in the mixed with Harry Friend and Sally Lewin being victorious.  So it all came down to the girls doubles; again it was another tense match but we just missed out.

Our final match was against Gloucestershire who again had another strong team.  Harry Friend was able to win his singles while David Turner and Milly Short were successful in their mixed doubles.

Our overall standing in the table was 4th.

Throughout the day it was a pleasure to be team captain with all players demonstrating great tennis knowledge, sportsmanship and character.  Well done.

Keith Pratt
