THE TEAM
Captain: Steve Barnett
Kate Horsburgh, Kirsten Campbell-Ferguson, Georgina Cupper, Alicia Williams
Day 1 Report
Our first opponents were Shropshire and with a strong line up of 7.1 rated players from H&W we were looking forward to a positive morning of tennis, with Kate playing number one, Kirsten at two and Georgina three. Kirsten was the first to finish winning 4-0, 4-0 closely followed by Kate winning 4-1, 4-1. Georgina had a tough first set against the Shropshire number three but won the first set 7-1 in the tie break and then followed the solid performance by winning the second set 4-0. The doubles match was played later in the day with an eager Alicia and Kirsten. The opposition proved no problem and the girls won comfortably 4-0, 4-0. Our first opposing team beating 4-0 in matches was a great result to start.
The second match for day one was Staffordshire. With the same singles line up Kirsten took first blood by winning her match 4-2, 4-0. Georgina was the next to finish but lost 4-0, 4-1 to a strong opponent. Kate fought hard in her singles match but only closely lost 5-4 in the first set and 5-3 in the second. Being 2-1 down after the singles matches Alicia and Georgina were brought in to try and take us into a match tiebreak decider. Unfortunately after an outstanding effort from the girls we lost 4-2, 4-2, meaning we lost the match 3-1.
Day 2 Report
Day two started with a matchup against North Wales. With our line up of Kate number one, Kirsten number two and Alicia three, the girls played some excellent tennis to win all singles matches in straight sets Kate won 4-1, 4-2, Kirsten 4-0,4-0 and Alicia 4-1, 4-1. Georgina and Kate represented the County in the doubles and proved too strong for the opponents winning 4-1, 4-0.
The second match of the day was against South Wales and with the same order from H&W we again proved the better players on the day winning all three singles rubbers. Kate won 4-0, 4-0, Kirsten 5-3, 4-0 and Alicia 4-1, 4-0. Georgina and Kirsten played some great doubles to win the final match of the competition 4-1, 4-2.
With a few rain delays during day 1 and a none too friendly ‘no-ad’ rule the girls deserve their successes throughout the competition. Congratulations to the all the girls with an overall finish of second in the group, only missing out on the Finals by 2 points to Staffordshire.
