On the day Andy Murray bid to become a grand slam champion for a 2nd time, our U18 boys and girls travelled to Corby to compete against Cambridge, Suffolk and Nottinghamshire. The girls’ team, consisting of Joanna Kondratowicz, Nicola Clarke, Lucy Simper and Ellie Fleming, had two matches to play as Suffolk could not field a team! Joanna fought hard at number 1 and lost two tight matches, the second in a third set championship tie-break. Nicola, after a slow start, dug deep yet lost both matches in 2 close sets. Lucy and Ellie competed well but unfortunately came up against tough opposition!
The boys’ team, consisting of Ben Tolhurst, Jamie Marks, Jack Smith and Seb Timmermans, were missing players, so Ben stepped up to No.1. As each match went on, Ben improved, just losing his 3rd match in a championship tie break, a great effort. Player of the day, Jamie Marks picked up 3 wins, all against higher rated opposition - a top performance, which included some fantastic shot making and big serving when needed.
Jack and Seb played some strong opponents and put up a good fight, coming out though on the wrong side of some tough matches.
As Andy Murray came a close 2nd against Novac Djokovic, our County team gave 100% and although not getting the perfect results a top effort from the whole team, so well done.
