14U Boys and Girls report from the 12 Counties Competition – Corby
Captain – Jon Bradshaw
Boys Team – Ryan Gaskin, Oliver Nunn, Jack Smith and Nathan Snow
Girls Team – Kate Horsburgh, Hannah Gibbons, Kirsten Campbell-Ferguson and Alicia Williams
Our day started with a tough looking match against Nottinghamshire. The boys and the girls managed a fantastic 3-1 overall win. In the boys’ team Ryan, Oliver and Jack had excellent straight set wins, while Nathan narrowly missed out in the 3rd set match tie break. In the girls team Hannah just went down in a close 3rd set match tie break while Kate and Kirsten played really well to win in straight sets. In what turned out to be her only game Alicia played in one of the matches of the day winning 13-11 in the match tiebreak, finishing off the match with a fantastic forehand winner followed by an ace out wide.
The second match of the day was against Suffolk who unfortunately weren’t able to field a girls’ team. However their boys’ team was very strong. Ryan, Jack and Nathan all competed hard but all lost in straight sets. Oliver was again in fantastic form winning 4-1 4-1, hitting forehand winners from all over the court.
Our final match of the day was a very tight game against Cambridgeshire with both boys and girls drawing 2 all. Kate and Hannah both faced really tough high rated opponents; both battled very hard but went down in straight sets. Kirsten played another great game winning 4-0 4-0. Alicia received a walkover as they only managed to bring 3 girls. In the boys Ryan won 4-2 4-1 and Oliver kept up his 100 per cent record winning 4-0 4-2. Nathan had a tough ask going on court shortly after his previous match against a bigger and stronger opponent and he lost in straight sets. In the final match of the whole event Jack played a great match against a very determined high ranked player just narrowly losing 10-8 in the match tiebreak.
During the day there was a great team atmosphere. Thanks to all the players and the parents for their support.
