Venue – Manor Park
With the great weather and home advantage we were all set for a fantastic weekend of tennis. Most of the team are still relatively young for this age group but we were all set for some tough and competitive matches.
Day 1
We had our most competitive match of the weekend with Gloucestershire. Kirsten and Alicia gave us a fantastic start winning their singles matches in straight sets. Kate and Georgina both faced very difficult tasks, both battling really hard but unfortunately losing out in straight sets. At 2 matches all, going into the doubles, it was a very tense affair. In the doubles Kirsten and Alicia put in a stunning performance to win 6-3 6-4 to put us 3-2 up. Kate and Georgina’s doubles was the closest match of the weekend going down to a match tiebreak where they had match points but couldn’t quite see it out going down 13 – 11. The match all came down to the deciding doubles match tiebreak in which Kate and Alicia played really well but just lost 10-8.
Day 2
After the disappointment of just losing out the day before, all the girls picked themselves up and put in very good performances against Shropshire, winning all the singles in straight sets. In the doubles Alicia and Kirsten again put in a strong performance winning comfortably and Katie Cupper coming in to play with her sister Georgina lost in a tight match. Overall we had a very good 5-1 win.
Day 3
After a tiring couple of days we played in a third and fourth playoff against Oxfordshire. Wins in the singles for Georgina, Kate and Kirsten put us 3-1 up after the singles. A very tired Kate and Georgina battled really hard just losing out 10-7 in the match tiebreak. Imogen came in to partner Kirsten in her only match of the weekend and both played some great doubles to win in straight sets to give us an overall 4-2 win and a third place finish.
Congratulations to Kirsten Campbell-Ferguson for winning all 6 matches over the weekend.
Thanks to all the players for their effort over the weekend. With a young team finishing 3rd is a good result and looks very promising for the next few years.
