Herefordshire & Worcestershire Road to Wimbledon County Finals 2014
Wimbledon’s Finals weekend saw H&W hosting their 14U Road to Wimbledon County Finals at Manor Park, Malvern.
14 Clubs took part in this year’s club competition running boys and girls events for their 14U players. The winners and runners up of these events were invited to take part in the County Finals with the chance of gaining a place in the National Finals held at Wimbledon in August.
The boys' draw had 22 competitors and 3 rounds of matches were played on the Saturday leaving the semi-finals and finals for the Sunday.
The girls had a smaller draw with 8 competitors and they played the first 2 matches on the Saturday and the final on the Sunday.
The girls’ final was between Imogen Looker of Pershore Tennis Club and Katy Lewin from Manor Park Tennis Club. They both had an impressive first 2 rounds and their form continued into the final which Katy won 6-3 6-1.
Katy’s younger sister Sally won the consolation final defeating Ruby Lee from Wythall Tennis Club
In the boys’ event Felix Gilll from H D A Redditch took on Harry Friend from Ross Tennis Club in the one semi final and Billy Wright from Worcester Tennis Club took on Joseph Wherry from Boughton Park Tennis Club in the other.
Billy and Joseph had an extremely exciting and close match with Billy clinching victory 7-6 6-7 and 10/4 in the match tie break. Felix had seen off Harry so all was set for an exciting final. Felix played a very good match and came out on top beating Billy 6-2 6-1
In the consolation final Dan Partington from Belbroughton, who had lost in the main draw to Felix, took on Harvey Cope, also from Belbroughton. Dan came out on top to win the match.
Felix and Katy will now represent H&W at the National Finals at Wimbledon during the week of the 11 August. This will be a very exciting experience for them both and we wish them an enjoyable and successful week.
