Our first opponent was Norfolk a tough tie first as we needed to get more points than them overall to prevent finishing in bottom place. Despite a hardy effort from both our boys and girls they both lost 3-1, with Alex Maggs winning in straight sets and Georgina Cupper beating her respective opponent in the championship tie break in the third set. Alfie Cook at 3rd seed lost in a close tiebreak against a player higher rated than him.
Our second round was against Nottinghamshire and the team put in a huge effort to get some points on the table. The boys performed well with George, Alfie and Alex putting in solid performances to win their matches and although putting up a great effort Herbie retired during the second set due to illness. The girls also played well with Imogen S closely winning 5-4, 5-4; Imogen L also winning in straight sets. Despite both Georgina and Katy losing their second match they put up a tough resistance, Georgina narrowly missed out on taking the match to a 3rd set losing 4-0, 5-4 and Katy losing 11-9 in the championship tiebreak.
The final tie was against Leicestershire and the girls got to work dismantling their opponents Imogen S, Katy and Imogen L all winning in straight sets to confirm the win against them. The boys put up a good effort but were unable to beat their opponents rated higher than them. After some painkillers Herbie was desperate to play and put up a good effort against his opponent. Despite the boys losing, the support from the rest of the team was great to see.
Overall the players performed well and with the boys coming in 3rd place and the girls in 2nd we were able to get some additional points for H&W. Unfortunately our efforts were not able to prevent Norfolk from coming above us on the day, who were joint bottom of the league with us. However, the team spirit was high and support amongst the team we excellent so congratulations to all the players.
