Men and women double up for shot at European glory

Thursday, October 22, 2009

Loughborough University's men will join the women's squad at the European Collegiate Tennis Association finals next month.

They won their qualification tournament last weekend by overcoming Leeds Metropolitan and Edinburgh University.

The quartet of Jonathan Kinsella, Scott Dickson, Josh Miller and Will Auger convincingly beat their Scottish counterparts 6-0, taking the four singles and two doubles matches.

Stuart Searle replaced the injured Miller against Leeds Metropolitan and the teams were tied 2-2 after the singles. Searle teamed up with Auger to win the first doubles event 8-5 and put Loughborough 3-2 ahead. The final match was a real nailbiter. Featuring Dickson and Kinsella, it reached 8-8 before the home side triumphed in the tie break.

"We did so well against Edinburgh but we always knew it would be tough against Leeds Met," said coach John Pankhurst. "Our men's team has real strength in depth at the moment and their performance against Leeds was as good a standard as I've seen since I've been here."

The men will now join Loughborough's ladies at the finals in Gosling, Hertfordshire, next month.
