Tom Kisiel wins top Leicestershire award

County men's captain Tom Kisiel won the senior player of the year award when Tennis Leicestershire held their annual awards evening.

The 22-year-also picked up the prestigious Anthony Hunting Cup.

The award for best junior boy went to Loughborough Town's Chris Egan Morris, who has a Great Britain ranking of seven, and Melton's Helen Thorpe, 16, won the award for best junior girl.

Zara Jurenko, from Kirby Muxloe, was presented with the special disability award for the three gold medals she won at the last year's Special Olympics in Leicester.

Other awards included veteran player, which was won by Mark Cox.

A former Davis Cup player, Cox now represents Britain in the over-65s team and won the national grass court championships at Wimbledon.

The team of the year award was won by Loughborough University, the European University champions.

Joan Barrett was honoured for her dedication and long service at Market Harborough Tennis Club, and the Greenshire's Cup went to Ben Minski for his exceptional performances and contribution to tennis last year.

The awards were presented by BBC sports presenter John Inverdale on a night when more than 300 players, supporters, coaches and club representatives turned out at Leicester Tigers.

Inverdale said there were financial constraints facing some budding youngsters and presented two special awards and prize money of £250 to Anna Chesca, eight, from Loughborough, and Thorpe, 16. Both players are ranked nationally.

Three young Leicestershire tennis players have earned places on the Lawn Tennis Association's (LTA) AEGON FutureStars Programme.

They are Helen Thorpe, Anna Chesca, and Hinckley's Ben Moore. The three are among 426 youngsters selected for the programme.
