A truly inspirational evening, the first of its kind anywhere in the UK, the Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport Oldest Athlete Celebration Event was held on the 29th September 2010 to celebrate the achievements of sports people, volunteers and physical activity participants from across Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland.
June Robertson, member of Gynsill Tennis Club, was among the 53 nominees who collectively amassed 4,177 years of physical activity and sports participation, from across Leicestershire, Leicester & Rutland. Local, past and future Olympians were also present, sharing their experiences, motivations and ambitions with over one hundred guests in the audience, by responding to questions posed to them by children from Mountsorrel Primary School (a member of the 2012 Get Set Network).
June Robertson, aged 82, joined the tennis club in her eary 20’s with her husband Michael, where they played at club level for many years entering many tournaments. The whole family has many fond recollections of attending these events. June continues to play tennis with friends at club at least twice a week, many times the mixed doubles matches consist entirely of octogenarians.
