Winners galore at Charnwood Tennis Club

Charnwood Lawn Tennis Club’s annual championship once again proved hugely popular.

Claire Elkington and 16-year-old Jack Baker won the Chris Mayes Mixed Doubles Tournament.

The pair saw off Conal King and Mary Nevil following a tie break in the semi-final 9-8 (7-5) and met Andy Marsh and Di Fisher in the final who defeated Mike Gubb and Julie Roberts 9-7.

The final was close in the early stages but Jack and Claire eventually got on top and won 9-4.

Chris Mears once again took the men’s singles title beating off 11 over competitors to take the crown.

He beat Mark Lawrence in the first semi-final while Conal King saw off Steve Mears 6-2 in the other, with Chris taking the title against the young Conal 9-4.

The woman’s singles tournament was decided with a final after a round-robin tournament involving five players with Caroline Wilkinson meeting Sophie Matthews in the final and Wilkinson winning 6-4

Then Wilkinson and Janette Massey dominated the women’s doubles competition only dropping two games as they saw off 10 pairs of players.

They won the semi-final 7-0 against Heikie Joens and Di Fisher and the final against Sophie Matthews and Ronnie Porte 9-0.

Finally in the semi-finals of the men’s doubles.

Conal King and Alex Zaman overcame Nick Barham and Mark Lawrence 9 – 5, and Chris and Steve Mears beat Nick Riddle and Richard Evans 9-2.

After beating Chris and Steve in the round robin section, Conal and Alex couldn’t repeat this in the final, as Chris and Steve played some excellent tennis in the final to win 9-5.
