Boulter targets a rapid return

Loughborough's Katie Boulter says she is determined to return to Wimbledon next summer an even better player after making a fine debut.

The 14-year old felt she did well against Paraguay's sixth seed Montserrat Gonzalez at Junior Wimbledon, despite losing her first-round match 6-4, 6-2.

Boulter also lost in the first round of the doubles where she partnered Laura Deigman. They lost 6-4, 3-6, 2-6 to Russia's Mayya Katsitadze and Brazil's Beatrice Haddad Maia.

Of her singles defeat, Boulter said: "I thought I competed well and that, if my forehand had been better, I might have had more of a chance.

"Playing that match gave me some perspective and it has made me more determined to do better next year and to prove that I can beat these players."

It has been a rapid rise for Boulter, who first picked up a racquet as a child thanks to her family's love of the sport, and it did not take the youngster long to realise that she had a talent.

"Originally, I started playing for fun and so I could play with my family," she said.

"But I'm quite competitive and I started winning a lot of matches.

"I realised as I got older that I was actually quite good, and that maybe I could play professionally one day."

Boulter took a big step towards that dream at Wimbledon, and she admits that she was overwhelmed when she first arrived at the venue.

"When I was told I would be playing at Wimbledon, I couldn't stop screaming with excitement," she said.

"It was a little nerve-racking to be out in front out a decent-sized crowd because I wasn't used to it, but after a while I was fine."

One of Boulter's biggest inspirations is her good friend Laura Robson, who went close to upsetting tournament favourite Maria Sharapova in the main draw of the women's singles.

Boulter has set her sights on following Robson into the professional game.

"It was really inspiring to see her do so well and give a top senior player a tough ride," said Boulter.

"She's a lovely girl who I've trained with many times and I hope that, in two or three years, I can be where she is now."
