The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Tennis Foundation has announced that Knighton Tennis Centre in Leicester, one of the area’s leading tennis sites, has been awarded ‘Beacon’ status as part of the AEGON Parks Tennis programme which recognises high quality, affordable community tennis programmes.
The announcement was made as the club was presented with their prestigious Beacon plaque by John Chapman, Chairman of Tennis Leicestershire.
The club joins 133 sites across the country to have achieved the national accolade which recognises the best community-focussed facilities offering free and affordable tennis as part of the AEGON Parks Tennis programme.
To achieve this status, facilities must also offer access to quality, affordable coaching as well as regular competitions for all ages and abilities.
Paul Sheard, Tennis Development Manager for Leicestershire and Derbyshire, said: “Knighton Tennis Centre has done a fantastic job over the last year developing opportunities for people throughout Leicester.
“The centre has a great coaching programme and the outreach programme also links to three local parks sites as well as a large number of primary schools which ensures that all sections of the community are able to access a wide range of affordable tennis opportunities. We are delighted with the progress made at the centre and the awarding of Beacon status is recognition of all their hard work.”
