Storm Tennis Roundup

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Loughborough Storm budding tennis star Yash Suribhatla continued a remarkable recent run of form in the Oakham Summer Series Mini Tennis Red Event during half term.

He finished runner up having won all 3 of his opening group matches and 2 out of 3 of his second round matches ending tied for first place with eventual winner Emilia Parker but officially being classified second on their head to head record.

When playing LTA sanctioned events or representing the Storm Mini Tennis teams Yash has now won 11 out of 14 matches and it marks a real maturation of his game despite only being 7 years old! He also currently sits second on the 8&U Storm leaderboard in the build up to the club championship finals later in the year.

Yash is just one of an exciting current crop of Storm youngsters producing great results lately and we're hoping they can all carry their form forwards into the remainder of the summer season and the winter season. Yash will be joined by Sebastian Harrison and Joe Varley at Tennis Leicestershire's 8&U Talent ID weekend which shows just how far they've all come in recent months!

The 12&U Boys A and B teams were both in action over the weekend of the 16th/17th of June, with the A team away at Market Bosworth knowing a win would leave them joint top of the league (though an outright league win was out of the question as their Sets and Games Won percentages were too far behind the leaders).

Unfortunately Storm Number 1 Adam Jalland was injured in his first match meaning he forfeited both his singles and doubles and that left the team with a tough job to salvage a result. Sam Glass, Matthew Stretton and Monty Zhuang put in some brave performances but ultimately couldn't come away with victory so they finish a promising season in 3rd place, well done to all the players who've represented the team for their efforts!

The B-team started the day at a disadvantage with Connor Wakley unfortunately having to withdraw through injury which meant only 3 players were able to represent the Storm. They did however put on a brave face against an LFE team who were runaway league leaders and had had three 12-0 wins in 4 matches before they met The Storm!

Seth Harris took their number one close in the first set though Jak Beardsley at 2 and Ioan Irmanov at 3 found their singles tough against a team who seem like they should probably have been playing in a higher division.

However, Seth and Jak put in a great performance to win their doubles 6-1, 6-4 and inflict only the third loss on an LFE team in 30 matches this season! It means the Storm ended a season of good all round tennis with a 10-2 defeat which leaves them in 4th place in their league after some strong showings against other teams, well done also to all those who've played for the B's this season.
