On Saturday 2nd June the U10’s Boys Team went to County Cup, It was an easy trip as we were the home side playing from Loughborough Town Tennis Club on Ingle Pingle Lane.
Representing Leicestershire were Owen Wilson of Victoria Tennis Club, Alex Solonenko of Leicester Forest East and Dominic McKaig from Charnwood Tennis Club. With a few good practices under our belt we went into the weekend in great spirits with the boys getting along with each other brilliantly.
We started the campaign against Northamptonshire and good performances from Owen and Alex meant we were 2-1 up after the singles. They then partnered up to win the doubles getting us our first win of the weekend 3-1.
Next up were Lincolnshire who had just had a very close match vs a strong Warwickshire team losing narrowly on a Tie Break Shootout so we thought we might be in for a tough time.
Owen, Alex and Dom were all on court at the same time and a stand out performance from Dom meant we were still in with a chance after the singles but trailing 1-2.
Dom and Owen partnered up for the doubles winning a very close match to level the tie at 2-2.
Owen and Alex went on to face the no1 & 2 from Lincs and despite a great effort lost the tie break shoot out decider.
All still to play for on day two.
The team was raring to go on the Sunday but unfortunately the British Summer had other ideas. With no play by 10.30am and heavy rain all morning and a forecast for this to continue all day the tie was abandoned. Many thanks to the hard working team at Loughborough for keeping the players, parents and coaches warm on the Sunday with cups of tea and cheese toasties!
So Warwickshire went through to the finals as they were the only team to have 2 wins after day one.
A disappointing end to the weekend, but the team were first class and an example to all other Leicestershire players with their on and off court behaviour throughout the weekend.
It was a great pleasure to be team captain.
