News from Carisbrooke TC

Friday, April 05, 2013

The winds of change continue to sweep through Carisbrooke Tennis Club, along with the vicious, icy March winds blowing across the courts. Thank goodness for ‘The Dome’ which has proved invaluable and very popular in this terrible winter
and early Spring. Peter Blackwell has done a sterling job in organising the bookings and keeping everybody happy.
Head Coach Jack Simpson is heading up the club’s Clubmark application process, helped by an enthusiastic committee, and we hope to attain Clubmark status by mid-Summer. The junior coaching programmes are now taking shape and Mini-
tennis sessions are already attracting new junior members who are enjoying their tennis.
A big all-round club effort was put into our Open Day on Sunday 17th March but of course the weather was lousy - wet, cold and snowy. However, a lot of interested people, both adults and juniors, turned up and had a good time and are going to come back to play tennis at Carisbrooke.
The well-established Easter Carisbrooke Grade 4 tournament was held in the week of 25th – 30th March in bitterly cold conditions. Most matches were not played in 'The Dome' but out in the freezing cold. Thanks to Michael Page, tournament organiser, for keeping things ticking along nicely and well done to all the players who braved the
weather without complaint and who produced some excellent matchplay tennis under very difficult circumstances.
Congratulations to member Anna Galeva who won the Under 14 Girls event and increased her lead at the top of the Under 14 Girls County Leaderboard.
Everybody at Carisbrooke is looking forward to the coming season and regular match practices have been scheduled to start in early April so that teams can prepare well. Here’s hoping for some glorious weather and some good, competitive
tennis.
On the social side, music guru Dave Oliver is a keen and successful quiz competitor and he is currently organising a club quiz to be held on 20th April. This will be our first official club social night of the year. Fortunately for all participants,
Dave will be setting the questions and not answering them! It should be a good night and we are hoping for a bumper turn-out.
New Members
We are offering a special rate to new adult members of £160 to new members in their first year at Carisbrooke which is a real value for money offer so we hope to see our membership continue to rise.
