Ashby's James Ison achieved a notable double at the Leicestershire county junior championships. Playing with a maturity beyond his years he came through two 3 set finals on the same day to land both the flagship u-18 boys' singles and also the u-16 title.
In the main under 18 girls' event, the Leicestershire club's Jennifer Gadsby made up for losing out in last year's final by overcoming Amelia Coltman.
As has been the tradition for last century, the finals were played out in front of a large crowd filling the the grandstand of the Leicestershire club in Stoneygate, one of Britain's oldest tennis clubs. Former world No 13, Leicester's Mark Cox, was on hand to present the trophies.
Tournament director, Geoff Bone, commented "we have had a marvellous week's tennis, involving the scheduling of 501 matches over 17 age groups of singles and doubles. Whilst competition has been intense, the standard of sportmanship has also been an outstanding feature of the championships. The county has a very high participation rate in junior tennis, in fact one of the highest in the country. The quality of entrants is also extremely good, we have several boys and girls who have represented the county at full senior level."
