Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, Horncastle, was successful in the AEGON Team Tennis Schools Year 8 & 10 quarter-finals resulting in winning the regional finals held at Nottingham Tennis Centre last year. To get to the regional stages of this competition Queen Elizabeth’s had won the county round earlier in summer 2011and then defeated Lady Manners School, Derbyshire and Loughborough High School to be one of four schools from the Midlands to qualify for the Regional Finals.
Mrs Parsons, Team Captain of QEGS, said, “It was an all-round performance which demonstrated their fighting spirit and encouragement towards each other in what was a roller-coaster day of tennis.” QEGS beat Hagley R.C. High School and Bedford Girls’ School both on match tie-break sets.”
The winners of the Midlands (QEGS), the North, the South and the South-West booked their places to play in the National Finals which were held at Bolton Tennis Arena on the weekend of Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 December. Queen Elizabeth’s was one of the final four teams in this prestigious national event.
QEGS, having fought hard to reach the National Finals, enjoyed the competition and experience. They were outplayed at this level, however, the lessons learnt have been invaluable to the players in terms of where their games are at and how to progress. Queen Elizabeth’s finished in fourth place nationally, which is a tremendous achievement and are proud to be in the company of Talbot Heath (Dorset), Holmfirth (Yorkshire) and Sevenoaks (Kent) – all independent schools.
