Sportivate Information Workshop: Norwich Family Golf Centre, Wednesday 14 August 6pm-8pm.
Backed by National Lottery funding, Sportivate aims to give young people who currently aren’t playing sport in their own time the chance to find a sport they like. The young people are then helped to find a club or other venue where they can keep taking part.
We would like to invite you to a Sportivate information workshop, where you will be able to find out about the latest Norfolk based research about young people and their attitudes and thoughts towards sport and physical activity. You will also have the opportunity to access Sportivate funding, and given guidance about the application process. Through Sportivate you can access funding of up to £35 per head to deliver a 6 week sport or physical activity programme. Funding can cover marketing costs, coaching costs, facility hire and more.
New figures published by Sport England show 256,297 teenagers and young adults have so far benefitted from free or discounted six-to-eight week courses in 70 different sports through Sportivate. Of these, almost 215,000 have successfully completed their coaching course, missing no more than one session.
Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said: “Sportivate is encouraging hundreds of thousands of young people who were inspired by the London 2012 Games, to take up sport, enjoy it and keep playing it. Sport has an incredible power to bring young people together and improve their lives and I hope Sportivate continues to go from strength to strength.” Research shows that eight out of 10 of the young people are sticking with sport three months after they’ve completed their Sportivate course.
Janis Baker, from YMCA Junior Badminton Club, who coached the taster sessions said: “Through running Sportivate sessions, I got to meet a lot of new young people who have never played badminton before. It gives the students the chance to build some confidence and at the end of the six weeks I can direct them on to weekly sessions already taking place at clubs.”
Norma Bowen, Regional Officer for Badminton England agrees. “Sportivate is a good project to introduce new young players into sports and link to local clubs. Coaches are able to enthuse players and identify those interested in pursuing the sport.”
